The Compensation Senior Specialist will assist in the administration of JCPenney's compensation strategy. Candidate should possess strong analytical skills and ability to navigate through ambiguity. Reports to the Director, Compensation at JCPenney’s Home Office.


Assists in market pricing and salary structure development - primarily for broad-based pay programs for Stores, Supply Chain or Home Office organizations.

Collects and analyzes competitive data and trends, sets pay levels which are appropriate for attracting, retaining and motivating employees while not incurring excessive costs.

Participates in job evaluations; analyzes job responsibilities, activities, duties, requirements and organizational structure and recommends internal job placement in the appropriate level, title, FLSA classification and determines market range.

Assists with effective coordination of research, surveys and studies directed toward the development of current pay plans and compensation standards.

Participates in external compensation surveys.

Consults with human resources staff regarding the implementation, integration and administration of compensation plans and programs.

Maintains knowledge of new or pending local, state, federal legislation that may impact compensation programs.

Coordinates with financial areas regarding cost and tax implications for various compensation plans.

Aids in and may oversee the implementation of new or revised plans, programs, standards and procedures, assuring incorporation of financial/administrative controls and cost considerations.

Core Competencies & Accomplishments:

Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in business administration, human resource management, or statistics is preferred, and a Master’s degree is desired.

Minimum of 2 years in Human Resources; 1-2 years in compensation plan design preferred

Core competencies in verbal and written communication, financial analysis, organizing work, building relationships and aligning with the needs of the business, and influencing others.

Demonstrated ability to effectively interact on a cross-functional level (e.g. legal, tax, accounting, communication) to successfully implement & administer compensation plan designs.

Proficient with Microsoft Office software, in particular advanced Excel skills. Specifically an ability to work with files containing large amounts of data.
