Session 2
5 Compensation Trends You Need to Know

The last two years in the compensation arena were unique and unprecedented. In 2021, we saw previously deemed “outlier” offers become commonplace; just one year later, rising layoffs and compression resulted in many revised Total Rewards strategies.

Factors like COVID-19, remote work, the urban exodus, inflation, and global conflict continue to impact the current compensation landscape.

While we can’t predict the future, here are 5 compensation trends we can count on in 2023:

  • With Pay Transparency laws in California and New York in full effect, more transparency regulations are coming. Employees and job seekers are paying attention, and companies need to be ready.
  • More robust Total Rewards packages may include expanded employee benefits (beyond healthcare) and will be reflected in compensation.
  • Economic uncertainty and a potentially looming recession will continue to impact layoffs and offers.
  • Merit + Promo Cycles (Compensation Cycles) will become shorter and more complex.
  • “Band-Aid Bonuses” may replace salary increases and/or higher salary offers in the short term.
