Message from President - Changes

Happy Summer NTCA Members & Associates! This year marks North Texas Compensation Association 25th Anniversary and we've been making big changes for the future. My commitment in 2018 was to get NTCA back on track financially, streamline inefficient operations and bring the organizations technology forward. I'm happy to announce the work done to gain better solutions is visible in our 2018 YTD financial numbers shown below.

We implemented a membership system with new website that streamlined our operations, financial transactions and provided digital tool offerings to further membership engagement. Strong business knowledge and the negotiating with venues on hosted certification courses and member luncheons along with replacing our digital platforms (G-Suite, Zoom) reduced expenses and still delivering value.

In June, we changed our association management company, which is NTCA largest expense. After 5 years with previous AMC and assessment of performance, value and costs it was time to make that change. All the work happened through volunteers acting in the best interest for NTCA.

We also wanted to understand what membership wanted; so, we launched the Voice of Membership survey to guide decisions around future programs/communications and value. In addition, we launched a NTCA newsletter, Total Rewards Topics and Forums to promote engagement and information for membership.

In 4 months, I will complete my Presidency and will be moving onward. Who in our membership will step up as the next President of NTCA?

Announcement College Alliance Chair

What is the College Alliance Program?

The College Alliance Program engages local professors & students with HR/Total Rewards education, networking and development opportunities through North Texas Compensation Association membership.

We are happy to announce Dr.Brian Martinson as our chosen College Alliance Committee Chair.

Dr.Brian Martinson

Dr. Martinson is an assistant professor and assistant chair of the Management Department at Tarleton State University. He is currently the president of the Cross Timbers SHRM chapter and also serves as the faculty advisor for the Stephenville and Fort Worth campuses’ Student SHRM chapters.

He holds a PhD in Management with an emphasis in Strategic Human Resource Management from UTA, an MBA with an emphasis in International Business from the American University in Cairo, and a BA in Philosophy and Theater from the University of Minnesota.

He holds the SPHR and SHRM-SCP certifications and is an Enrolled Agent admitted to practice before the Internal Revenue Service.

He founded and served as CEO of a nonprofit, professional theater company in Minnesota for 10 years before moving to Egypt and founded and served as CEO of a multibranch tax preparation firm in north Mississippi upon returning to the US. He also served as the assistant director of employment and employee relations at Ithaca College and as the Director of Human Resources for the Faculty of Computing and Information Science at Cornell University in upstate New York before moving to Arlington, Tx.

Voice of Membership Survey Results

North Texas Compensation Association Board of Directors reached out to membership to help define what programs, education or events that would benefit the profession by voice of membership survey. We completed the 2018 Member survey and tallied up the results last month! Last membership survey was 2013...check out the results from 2013.

Conference Coverage with Brooke Birdsong

The Total Rewards Conference 2018 with World at Work this year was hosted in our backyard in Grapevine, and I was so pleased to see such a great turnout of compensation and benefits professionals from the north TX area. The benefit in being able to network with colleagues at an event like this and discuss so valuable. I found myself engaging in thought provoking discussion and challenged to return to my role with fresh ideas, relevant solutions, and encouragement that I’m not facing opportunities in my organization alone.

While there were a thousand topics around everything from sales compensation, employee recognition, and pay equity, there were really two themes that really stood out to me that each of the keynote speakers touched on: the strength of organizational culture to move into the next era of total rewards and our capability to plan for a dynamic and quickly changing workforce. These are two huge buckets, and World at Work provided plenty of jam-packed presenters to address specific challenges around both of these themes. From round table and panel discussions to authors and fortune 500 company testimonials, conference attendees received first-hand experience on what is working, what is failing, and what is coming.

The breakouts where I took the most notes involved 3 key things: data and automation, changing performance management, and planning for the 2020 workforce.

Benefits of AI and Data Automation in HR impact to Total Rewards:

Crowdsourced data is becoming a broadly accepted source for personalized data – helping employers create spaces for virtual workplace capabilities, customized pay structures, and benefits platforms for individual employees at various stages in life and career.
Employees can receive tailored, relevant communications from the compilation of individual inputs.
HR professionals are leveraging predictive analytics more than ever before for greater precision in budget planning, labor market supply/demand, and attrition predictions.
HR Leaders have optimized capability to better match employees to jobs for increased productivity and motivation.
Streamlined job analysis, documentation, and evaluation tools for compensation professionals.
Customized benefits strategies that are tailored to individual employees at a particular stage in life/career.

Revamping the traditional performance management process– a universally hated process through removing performance ratings all together.

Focusing on driving actual organizational goals of development, equitable rewards, and organizational performance.
Strategic HR Shifts:

- From Management-driven to EMPLOYEE POWERED

The 2020 Workforce Assessment:

Technology continues to change at a breakneck pace.
Organizational structure and norms are shifting.
The Social & Digital Revolution is here.
Broad diversity is the new reality.
New ways of working create challenges for employer branding.

Overall – the conference was chock full of relevant information to take back to organizations. If nothing else it validated that the concept of strategic total rewards is not just the latest hot HR term, but that the profession itself will be pivotal in creating and supporting organizational competitive advantage in the near future.

NTCA has immediate need to fill the role of President for 2019-2020. The position will officially begin Jan 1st 2019. NTCA is at a pivotal point where we need a successor in place as soon as possible.

The President is responsible for directing NTCA strategy and presides at membership and Board of Directors meetings. This position is the official spokesperson for NTCA and guides the directors and committees in carrying out the goals and objectives for NTCA. The President handles group public relations and the ongoing solicitation of new members.

Using Technology to Increase Member Engagement & Simplify Operations

Happy Spring NTCA Members & Associates. My name is Jenni Porshakin and have taken on the role as NTCA President for 2018. Previously, I was Vice-President & Sales Compensation Chair where I focused on streamlining the operations of our organization to better serve membership. Last year, I worked towards implementing a membership management system and new website which launched at beginning of this year. My goal is ensure NTCA continues to flourish in it's mission while making sure our decisions are fiscally appropriate. The new system provides functionalities that improve interactions for our members at the same time reducing NTCA operational expenses. I work with our Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and Management Company to provide you with the best membership value possible.

Board of Directors Announcement

We are happy to announce the appointment of two remarkable leaders to NTCA Board of Directors: Brooke Birdsong as VP Education and Vita Taylor as VP Marketing. Both ladies bring to NTCA a wealth of experience, ideas and passion. Please help us in congratulating Brooke and Vita to the NTCA Board of Directors.

Brooke Birdsong

VP Education

Brooke Birdsong has been elected into NTCA Board of Directors as our VP Education. Brooke is the Director of Total Rewards at Associa based in Dallas, TX. Brooke’s background includes corporate strategy development, plan design, analysis, and cost control of corporate health, welfare and benefit plans. She has supported both public and private sector markets including consumer products and goods, manufacturing, IT, and real estate.

Brooke obtained her MBA from Dallas Baptist University. She resides in Rowlett with husband Scott, four children and two dogs. In Brooke’s free-time, she loves traveling, riding motorcycles, cheering on her favorite sports teams or heading out to the range.

Vita Taylor

VP Marketing

Vita Taylor has been elected into NTCA Board of Directors as our VP Marketing. Ms.Taylor comes to us with over 30 years’ compensation experience and has previously held board positions at Houston Compensation & Benefit Association, Association of Human Resource Systems Professionals and has been on several Compensation Survey Groups’ Steering Committees.

Vita founded Compensation Solutions in 1994, an independent compensation and compliance consultation firm, where she provides services in the areas of compensation program design, total compensation market analysis, programs and practices examination and study, merger integration of HR programs and systems and compliance evaluation/counsel.

She has worked within a wide array of industries. Vita obtained a BBA from the University of Houston and a Master’s from the University of California, Irvine. In her free time, Vita enjoys friendship with colleagues, photography, and watching movies with her husband and cat. She’s a native Texan, who has enjoyed traveling and seeing life through the eyes of others.

Cancelled- Strategic Communication in Total Rewards (T4/GR9), March 29/30, 2018

The hosted certification course, Strategic Communication in Total Rewards (T4/GR9) that was scheduled for March 29-30th, 2018 has been cancelled due to low registrants. In order for us to host WorldatWork certification courses, we need at least 15 people registered to meet expense threshold.

EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION FORUM

Overview

Beginning in 2016, NTCA created specialty forums for unique compensation areas such as executive compensation and sales compensation. In order to help us learn how the executive compensation forum could be made more effective, we are taking a very brief poll to help direct our efforts. On May 7th, 2017, WorldatWork awarded NTCA Local Association of the Year for 2016

The Local Association of the Year award honors one association in the WorldatWork Local Network for its outstanding support of the profession in the local community and partnership with WorldatWork. The honoree is presented with their award at the WorldatWork Local Network Leadership Conference and honored throughout the year with other points of recognition.

Dear Members and Associates,

We want to make you aware that the North Texas Compensation Association website (www.ntcassoc.org) is scheduled to be down starting 12/23/2017 to 1/5/2018. We will be using this time to upgrade to a membership management system and preparing the launch of our new NTCA website.

To safeguard stability of the new platform, we are performing the upgrade over the holidays to ensure a smooth transition.

During this maintenance window, the site www.ntcassoc.org will be inaccessible. NTCA new website will launch on January 6, 2018.

Expect to receive a launch communication providing you with the enhancements & benefits gained from the system upgrade & new website. Additionally, we will provide a tutorial on how to maneuver through the new site including updating member profiles, registering for events, etc.

Texas Total Rewards Conference September 14 - 15, 2017 in Fort Worth

The Texas Total Rewards Conference is geared to provide total rewards professionals with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills on current trends of total rewards. It is also a great opportunity to obtain HRCI and other credits for Human Resources professionals with accreditations.
