Message from President - Changes
Happy Summer NTCA Members & Associates! This year marks North Texas Compensation Association 25th Anniversary and we've been making big changes for the future. My commitment in 2018 was to get NTCA back on track financially, streamline inefficient operations and bring the organizations technology forward. I'm happy to announce the work done to gain better solutions is visible in our 2018 YTD financial numbers shown below.
We implemented a membership system with new website that streamlined our operations, financial transactions and provided digital tool offerings to further membership engagement. Strong business knowledge and the negotiating with venues on hosted certification courses and member luncheons along with replacing our digital platforms (G-Suite, Zoom) reduced expenses and still delivering value.
In June, we changed our association management company, which is NTCA largest expense. After 5 years with previous AMC and assessment of performance, value and costs it was time to make that change. All the work happened through volunteers acting in the best interest for NTCA.
We also wanted to understand what membership wanted; so, we launched the Voice of Membership survey to guide decisions around future programs/communications and value. In addition, we launched a NTCA newsletter, Total Rewards Topics and Forums to promote engagement and information for membership.
In 4 months, I will complete my Presidency and will be moving onward. Who in our membership will step up as the next President of NTCA?

Announcement College Alliance Chair
What is the College Alliance Program?
The College Alliance Program engages local professors & students with HR/Total Rewards education, networking and development opportunities through North Texas Compensation Association membership.
We are happy to announce Dr.Brian Martinson as our chosen College Alliance Committee Chair.
Dr. Martinson is an assistant professor and assistant chair of the Management Department at Tarleton State University. He is currently the president of the Cross Timbers SHRM chapter and also serves as the faculty advisor for the Stephenville and Fort Worth campuses’ Student SHRM chapters.
He holds a PhD in Management with an emphasis in Strategic Human Resource Management from UTA, an MBA with an emphasis in International Business from the American University in Cairo, and a BA in Philosophy and Theater from the University of Minnesota.
He holds the SPHR and SHRM-SCP certifications and is an Enrolled Agent admitted to practice before the Internal Revenue Service.
He founded and served as CEO of a nonprofit, professional theater company in Minnesota for 10 years before moving to Egypt and founded and served as CEO of a multibranch tax preparation firm in north Mississippi upon returning to the US. He also served as the assistant director of employment and employee relations at Ithaca College and as the Director of Human Resources for the Faculty of Computing and Information Science at Cornell University in upstate New York before moving to Arlington, Tx.
Voice of Membership Survey Results
North Texas Compensation Association Board of Directors reached out to membership to help define what programs, education or events that would benefit the profession by voice of membership survey. We completed the 2018 Member survey and tallied up the results last month! Last membership survey was 2013...check out the results from 2013.

Conference Coverage with Brooke Birdsong
The Total Rewards Conference 2018 with World at Work this year was hosted in our backyard in Grapevine, and I was so pleased to see such a great turnout of compensation and benefits professionals from the north TX area. The benefit in being able to network with colleagues at an event like this and discuss so valuable. I found myself engaging in thought provoking discussion and challenged to return to my role with fresh ideas, relevant solutions, and encouragement that I’m not facing opportunities in my organization alone.
While there were a thousand topics around everything from sales compensation, employee recognition, and pay equity, there were really two themes that really stood out to me that each of the keynote speakers touched on: the strength of organizational culture to move into the next era of total rewards and our capability to plan for a dynamic and quickly changing workforce. These are two huge buckets, and World at Work provided plenty of jam-packed presenters to address specific challenges around both of these themes. From round table and panel discussions to authors and fortune 500 company testimonials, conference attendees received first-hand experience on what is working, what is failing, and what is coming.
The breakouts where I took the most notes involved 3 key things: data and automation, changing performance management, and planning for the 2020 workforce.
Benefits of AI and Data Automation in HR impact to Total Rewards:
Crowdsourced data is becoming a broadly accepted source for personalized data – helping employers create spaces for virtual workplace capabilities, customized pay structures, and benefits platforms for individual employees at various stages in life and career.
Employees can receive tailored, relevant communications from the compilation of individual inputs.
HR professionals are leveraging predictive analytics more than ever before for greater precision in budget planning, labor market supply/demand, and attrition predictions.
HR Leaders have optimized capability to better match employees to jobs for increased productivity and motivation.
Streamlined job analysis, documentation, and evaluation tools for compensation professionals.
Customized benefits strategies that are tailored to individual employees at a particular stage in life/career.
Revamping the traditional performance management process– a universally hated process through removing performance ratings all together.
I recommend looking into Tamra Chandler’s work at PeopleFirm and her book “How Performance Management is Killing Performance, and What to do About it!”
The 2020 Workforce Assessment:
Technology continues to change at a breakneck pace.
Organizational structure and norms are shifting.
The Social & Digital Revolution is here.
Broad diversity is the new reality.
New ways of working create challenges for employer branding.
Overall – the conference was chock full of relevant information to take back to organizations. If nothing else it validated that the concept of strategic total rewards is not just the latest hot HR term, but that the profession itself will be pivotal in creating and supporting organizational competitive advantage in the near future.
